Matthew 6:2-3 So whenever you give to the poor and do acts of kindness, do not blow a trumpet before you [to advertise it], as the hypocrites do [like actors acting out a role] But when you give to the poor and do acts of kindness, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing [give in complete secrecy], 4 so that your charitable acts will be done in secret; and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.

What is alms giving? It is as Jesus declares in the above verse- giving to the poor in secrecy and not advertising the same. Why is it supposed to be in secret? It is to protect the person’s dignity in his/her crisis which they face. Alms giving is a charitable act and our Father who sees what is done in secret rewards us.

What are the rewards for giving to the poor?
Psalm 41: 1-3 Blessed [by God’s grace and compassion] is he who considers the helpless;
The Lord will save him in the day of trouble .
The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.
The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

We do not give our tithes as alms. Alms giving determine and sieves true friends from false friends. When we consider the poor which is also the heart of God, He watches over our almsgiving and the Lord promises us five blessings:
a. We are saved in the day of trouble
b. We are protected and kept alive
c. We are blessed in the land
d. We are protected from the desire of our enemies
e. We receive sustenance and strength even when we are sick.

Proverbs 19:17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.
Besides the above five blessings the Lord promises us that He will pay back (reimburse) that which we have given so there is no loss financially.
Wow, we cannot out give God. He is in the miracle working business and will not let us down. Amen
